Haven't you notice that in most movies, and television shows the female and male characters are always or similarly portrayed the same in each movies/television shows.
The female are always shown as doing chores such as cleaning, lauding and cooking, are known to be sex object for the purpose of serving men, and are victims that can't protect themselves from harassment, sexual assault and murder without their man, weak mined, skinny, lady-like, and beautiful.
Male on the other hand are shown as independent, strong willed, muscular body, have no emotion at all, very aggressive and violent at times, always have a past history, and for some reason are single. They usually meet their lovers in the movie/television show.
What i am trying to say is, why hasn't the media done anything about this? I am certain they know all these stereotypes are occurring, and they are still turning head away. Once you go see a movie you like, you wish that the main character was you, and thus you start to regret your life. Do you agree with the fact that the movies/television shows that your going to see in the future need to change the role of men and female. The video also states that at a young age you hear about gender roles. For an example a female ALWAYS has to play with Barbie, Polly pocket, and Disney princess. While a male ALWAYS has to play with Lego, Star Wars and Hot wheel. I think it ridicules to the amount of stereotypes we have as a kid and growing up watching movies/television shows that strive on gender stereotypes as mention above.
I agree that the media mostly always protrays stereotpes where the woman is beautiful but fragile and needs a man to save her who is strong and gorgeous. I think people are now used to it because this is what we have been watching most of our lives. We are taking steps away from these typical stereotypes but it will take time to actually make a drastic change in media. People are accustomed to the way men and women are protrayed and to give that up and accept new ideas will take a while but we are making progress. There are some new movies that do challenge these stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteYes i agree, with the fact that it will take time for the media to change, and their are some movies that do challenge there stereotypes. But how long can they last? For ever new movies that challenge stereotypes there is always 2 to 3 new movies that help build the stereotypes. (3:1 ratio maybe)
DeleteYes Mayur, I agree with you because the media does often portray males and females in stereotypical roles and frankly it is getting a little old. There are times when I am watching a movie and I can predict what will happen (i.e. woman and man meet, they have a huge fallout, and eventually they are able to work it out because they are in love, etc...). Despite this, I still watch these movies which is interesting because I really don't know why. I think part of the reason could be because I can project myself into the character's shoes and kind of pretend that I am that character (as you stated above). That allows the viewer to escape from their reality and convince them that this unrealistic and unattainable lifestyle portrayed in movies is what one should be striving for. This technique that media producers use is successful and it is evident because of how well these movies sell.
ReplyDelete(To add on to Saham's point) I agree with the last little bit, most people watch movies, or shows, as a way to escape reality, momentarily, and step into the shoes of a character whose life is extremely predictable. For instance, when I watch shows (or movies), I become so engrossed in them, that I honestly create a mental block in my mind that separates me from reality for the duration of the show (or movie). Though this technique is harmless (I believe), the constant messages sent in our mind through these popular media, embed themselves in people's minds, and stigmas are created unknowingly. Sometimes I realize that I ‘believe’ in certain stereotypes, without having any understanding as to why I believe in it; this is the harmful context caused indirectly through popular media texts.
DeleteI like your statement about how a movies escape reality and you wish your were that character in the movie. Now let me ask you a question. Does that make you envy charter? Now in my opinion if i envy another person, i wish i was that person which make me hate my life (just for a while, after i get used my life again *sign*).
